Navy Band Southwest is one of the Navy’s finest and oldest continuing musical organizations. Now with over 100 years of support to the San Diego community, the band serves as the musical ambassador for the Commander, Navy Region Southwest. Under the direction of Lieutenant Commander Matthew M. Shea, the band is located on Naval Base San Diego.
Navy Band Southwest averages over 400 performances a year and its 45 members are routinely tasked to travel outside of California to seven other states in the region for military funerals, ceremonial support, public events and concerts. These highly trained professional musicians are accomplished soloists on their instruments and join together to form a Ceremonial Band, Parade Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, Brass Band, and Rock Band. The majority of the band’s performances are in support of military ceremonies, but all of Navy Band Southwest’s ensembles also perform free public concerts, support recruiting initiatives, and partner with educators throughout the region, serving as clinicians and performing educational concerts at schools and universities.
Navy Band Southwest is a particularly important part of San Diego’s military heritage. Originating in 1923, Navy Band Southwest takes pride in upholding its rich tradition and promoting the pride and professionalism of today's United States Navy.
