Jet Noise Q &A:

Q1: How long has the Navy been flying fighter jet aircraft at Point Mugu?

A1: Point Mugu has based fighter jet squadrons since 1947, for many years vehicles like QF-86F Sabre, QF-4N Phantom III, F-14 Tomcat, and EA-6B Prowler flew over Ventura County everyday,

Q2: How many U.S. Navy fighter jet squadrons are based at NBVC Point Mugu?

A2: NBVC has no U.S. Navy fighter jet squadrons based at Point Mugu. The airfield supports routine jet aircraft from visiting installations.

Q3: Why do U.S. Navy fighter jets have to fly over Camarillo?

A3: All inbound military flights follow Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations when entering the Camarillo Class D & E airspace. Camarillo airspace supports multiple FAA designated approach patterns for multiple intersecting airports.

Title 49 of the United States Code, Subtitle VII, Part A, Subpart I, Section 40103, under this section, the FAA is responsible for assigning the use of airspace.

Q4: Why do the fighter jet’s fly so fast over Camarillo?

A4: During approach, when fighter jets land, they are travelling about 220 miles per hour, which is twice as fast than a passenger jet. Fighter jets must increase speed to blow engine air over their wings to artificially increase the lift, glide ratio and stay in the air.

Q5: Why doesn’t the base publish noise advisory’s when fighter jets arrive?

A5: The installation public affairs officer publishes noise advisors via social media channels when there are 5 or more visiting fighter jets. A press release is issued to media outlets when there are many more visiting fighter jets, typically during an annual Department of Defense exercise.
