SAN FRANCISCO – U.S. Marines volunteered at a pop-up food pantry run by San Francisco-Marin Food Bank as part of a community relations event held during the 41st annual San Francisco Fleet Week (SFFW), Oct. 5.

SFFW offers a variety of activities and events for Sailors and Marines to get involved with the local community. One of these events being the food pantry run by San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.

“We’re so lucky to have these Marines, plus some other community volunteers, helping us do this work,” said Katy McNight, director of community engagement at San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. “We can’t do it alone; We need all the volunteers we can get.”

More than 20 Marines, and several more community volunteers, prepared bags of fresh fruits and vegetables for the local community.

“It’s fun and it’s an opportunity to give back to the community,” said Gunnery Sgt. Miguel Villalobos, assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 11. “It gives us a chance to give back to the people we work for.”

According to McKnight, Sailors and Marines have been volunteering at San Francisco-Marin Food for the past eight years.

“I love seeing the Marines volunteer and working with them during fleet week,” said McKnight. “Our volunteers are the vehicle we use to serve the community.”

San Francisco-Marin Food Bank serves more than 53,000 households in the San Francisco community through food distribution like home delivered groceries and pop-up food pantries.

“Nearly 1,000 families will receive food from us today,” said McKnight.
