Port Hueneme wins best large commissary in the United States
22 April 2022
PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) – The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) announced the commissary onboard Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC), Port Hueneme received first-place honors for the 2020 Bill Nichols Award - Best Large Commissary in the United States, in Nov. 2021.
DeCA operates a worldwide chain of commissaries providing groceries to military personnel, retirees and their families in a safe and secure shopping environment.
“The honor of being selected as best large commissary cannot get any better,” said Charles Cho, commissary officer, NBVC. “Winning this award gives us a great deal of pride and recognizes all of our hard work we do in serving the best customers in the world. Go NBVC Port Hueneme!”
Nominations were judged on tangible and intangible qualities such as friendly environment, a well-run store, good work ethic and sense of a cohesive team.
“The criteria for these awards are very stringent, and the competition was steep,” said Rogers Campbell, store operations executive director, DeCA. “Every associate should be very proud of their achievements. You are all winners every day, and we applaud you and your accomplishments.”
“2020 was a tough year for all of us, but our store employees once again stepped up to the plate and got the job done,” said Bill Moore, director & chief executive officer, DeCA. “We are so proud and thankful for the hard work, service and commitment you all have shown. Now more than ever, you have earned this award.”
A core military family support element, and a valued part of military pay and benefits, commissaries contribute to enhancing the quality of life for America’s military and their families.
“We are honored that our commissary received top recognition,” said Capt. Robert "Barr" Kimnach III, commanding officer, NBVC. “The commissary and installation partnerships are key in delivering valuable benefits to military families and supporting readiness. This award highlights the excellence we are striving to achieve across our bases. We’re very proud of our commissary team!”
Commissaries provide a military benefit, saving authorized patrons thousands of dollars annually on their purchases compared to similar products at commercial retailers.
“Congratulations to Mr. Cho and the entire Port Hueneme team for the monumental accomplishment,” said Moore. “We want to also thank the leadership and community for recognizing this accomplishment at the local level where the benefit is truly delivered.”
NBVC is home to Point Mugu, Port Hueneme, San Nicolas Island, Laguna Peak, the Pacific Coast Seabees, the Westcoast Hawkeyes, 3 warfare centers, and 80 tenants. It is the largest employer in Ventura County and actively protects California’s largest coastal wetlands through its award-winning environmental programs.
